5 steps to take after a hit-and-run accident

If you have been in a car accident, you expect the other driver to stick around, make sure you are okay and exchange information to pay for damages caused. There are times when drivers will hit another car and then drive off, which is known as hit-and-run accidents. Some leave because they are uninsured, and others leave because they may be under the influence of drugs or simply because they do not want to deal with the hassle of a car accident. If you were seriously injured in the accident, this can create problems regarding your financial future. When you are involved in a hit-and-run accident, make sure to follow these steps.

1. Seek medical attention

Whether you feel you are injured or not, you will want to have a thorough examination by a medical professional to determine if there are any injuries that will cause you problems in the future. You may also need documentation that your injuries are tied to the accident if you seek compensation later.

2. Stay calm and get as much information as possible

If you are seriously injured, the last thing you are worried about is getting information from the other driver. The more information you have, the easier it is to protect yourself. If possible, get the make, model and license plate number of the car that hit you. Write down the location and time of the incident, take pictures of the car and scene if you are able, and take closer pictures of your car to document damage.

3. Speak to witnesses

If there were witnesses to the accident, ask them to stick around and give their statements to police to document what happened. Take their contact information and names so you can get in touch with them later if you need to.

4. Call the police

Every accident should involve a call to the police in order to document the accident and file a police report. Even if it is just a fender bender, move your car safely to the side of the road and call emergency services to come and document the event.

5. Hire an attorney

Even small accidents can result in large injuries and problems down the road. If you were involved in a hit-and-run, and you have injuries that affect your ability to work or pay your medical bills for treatment, an attorney may be able to help you seek compensation.
